Still reeling from a meaningless rampage of depressed intoxification, i made dinner for my girl and i. Chanting pep calls to myslef, i couldn't pass this one up, no matter if i felt like the lazy devil on my shoulder weighed 650 pounds. i did get in the car and i did head out to davis to the most feared place my ancient jaded bones dare not travel to. a college town of well healed brilliant young prospects who love the things i love, but don't feel the way i feel.
First things first, Hella cancelled. Casiotone for the Painfully Alone appeared - and though he didn't have everything together, his familiar retro damaged sound was more than welcomed by my tired ears. i'll just not mention the second singer/songwriter act, Mia Doi Todd. zzzZZ.
I kept my butt planted on the chairs provided, as a glance over my shoulder showed a room swelling with eager collegiate beavers. We were all here to see The Books. Their first tour ever. After three phenomenal albums, i'm still taken back by that fact.
Far be it from me to tell you what to do in your spare time. Seriously tough... scour your local papers and see if these blessed musicians are coming to your town.
There i was witness to the absence of the superficial. The music vibrated and plucked every sore nerve in my body. I was left a pair of eyes and a pair of ears. With no wandering eyes checking what brand of shoes each other were wearing... the audience of one was transfixed by a message of clarity and beauty from these four fine people.
The Books made everything but the essential disappear. Never once could you picture what bin you'd find their record, however the feeling conveyed was something of the most fond familiarity. Their music was so pure and devoid of pretense. I just wanted to drop the spoon and pluck the dull needle from my arm and rewind the tape to a time when exploration was the only means of existing.
The Books were that pure. Mish mashed video projected above their heads, coresponding to each note and lyric. it wasn't necessary. and the band knew it aswell. he simply muttered, "we've been making videos lately... it's a lot of fun".
Playing with constant half-smiles over their faces, i was actually feeling that fun. Experimentation without the baggage, The Books left the audience standing, viciously clapping and hollering for more, and that's exactly what they gave. a short acapella, and they sat back down to play a song to send us all home to report back to the world just how exceptional music can be.
check them out kids.

The Books are brilliant. I really hope they come across to England to play, because my life has been completely taken over by their last two albums.
Have the third on order at the moment... can't wait to hear it. 'Be Good To Them Always' is genius.
