animated ink lines, splatters...
anyone have any suggestions on how to create this effect that we see all over the place?

yup, just film it in a fishtank.
easy as that. what you do with it after that depends on your compositing/animation skills.

mk12 uses a lot of maya, but they also shoot a lot of there textures and such with a camera.

ah..well
in after effects..if you got trapcode's particular you can create maske thats are very fluid looking..but the first i did..way back was film ink and composit in to my scene...
