anyone made the conversion with no schooling or experience?

i worked in the ID department at peavey for almost 2 years. i did some industrial, but i think most places want you to have the schooling...and REALLY strong sketching skills.

Don't you need to be a mathematical genius to do industrial design? Or know CAD or something?

I did some industrial without training. Made lots of mistakes, but ultimately the product got done.

its mainly having a good understanding of 3D form, and how to represent it/explore and develop concepts in sketches. Doing an ID degree course doesnt hurt... but you can learn all the digital stuff on the job..

yeah, it's not just about knowing 3-D, you need to have a good grasp of manufacturing and material forming prodecures. On the 3-D side most companies want you to know either Pro E, Rhino or Solid works. I've actually thought quite a bit about going back to school for ID.
