" I think this is most prevalent in the graphic and web fields -- their 'disposable' nature facilitates it."
agreed. i think broadcast design is probably the most guilty of this phenomenon.

i think since that article was written we've only gone further down the road of praising stylists over designers... and its really pretty fucked up.

-----------------I think this is most prevalent in the graphic and web fields -- their 'disposable' nature facilitates it.
I think Style is often easier to attribute 'value' to, compared with Design .. its easier to digest/assimilate -- after all, that's what its made for ;)
Having said that, I think a lot of designers would be more than happy working as stylists, but are afraid to admit it (to themselves?).
I personally have never had a problem with the 'S'-word. I also hold the opinion that, in a sense, 'Style' needs to be 'Designed' as well ;)

black, great link that was btw, cheers. i swear i read it last night and was like "finally, somebody fucking said it"... then i read the date...

nice work...kinda reminds me of vault49, iso50, and some others.
i think picasso said something like this:
start with an idea, then create something out of it.

this is why i dont want the word 'designer' on my portflio site, heck, perhaps 'style' is actually the part of design that interests me the most !!?
one reason ive stuck with the term 'Communicator' rather than designer, or 'creative'
- Jaline0
this calls for a standing ovation
*stands, ovates, whistles, hoots, claps

"stylist.
I think it’s high time to restore this important term to wide currency, and not to disparage the validity of styling as a mode of expression, or as a career path. (I’m not one of those who would slag a young talent off with a dismissive “Oh, her? She’s just a stylist.” Styling is as crucial to good branding work as design, and maybe more so, but it’s not a replacement for it.)"

Jaline, yes, you have such a head start and don't even know it. but whatever you do, do not try your hardest to create trendy graphics... it's easy to try and emulate these guys... but you're only doing yourself a huge dis-service. strive to make stuff that comes from a real and personal feeling or idea.
nickNick...I now have full wood. That was said brilliantly. I couldn't agree more. *stands and claps*
- Solid0
question. is it design? or is it style? i'd say its 90% style.

-----------------A lot of it (not all) seems to fall under the "Style" category.
Graphic art.
And there's nothing wrong with that, but it isn't design.
- Jaline0
for sure.

That's true. Maybe I have a chance then?

and if you look... his pals are Nigel Dennis (electricheat) and Chuck Anderson (nopattern).. so i guess this is starting to make sense.
- nick0

matt morgan is another one with a similar approach...
- iDp0
Doesn't even make my willy twitch...not even slightly.

its designing within that style. thats why its used like a template by other designers.
