Well, there are problems with china as well - as much as there are elements in the gov't that are forward thinking for practical reasons, the majority of the country is still poor and their is rife corruption all over the place, so I pray the experiment will work there - let's all hope, becasue an industrialized China at 98% will wreck incredible ecological disaster.
If China is successful you better believe they will pull the US industry into this just to maintain economic viability...

I think you'll find that they work for a lot of companies in the good ole USA. For instance, they convinced Henry Ford III to invest some 3-5 billion dollars to complete revamp and renovate the Rouge River plant. The first Ford plant ever and the most infamous brown-field in the world.
I do see your point that it's not easy to convince American corpo's to be enviromentally sound, but it is if you show them that they can make more money by doing so.
