If you are going to talk about the icon, you can broaden that by discussing symbols and how symbols have been used throughout history to represent functions, locations, groups, directions, etc.
It might be interesting to compare/contrast sociological adaptation to symbols in the world and how they are designed for universal understanding. (Ex, the shape of a toilet on a sign in Japan will tell you there is a bathroom nearby even if all the text is japanese and you only speak english, or the very universal woman in skirt, man in pants restroom designations.)
Might be interesting to look at the web as the first truly universal medium and investigate how the use of symbols has (and can continue to) influenced iconography on web sites, as well as how long it will take for the masses to really adapt to icons replacing common text words.
If you use that, you owe me. I feel like I'm in college again!
