I am thinking of having my new site minimal and put the portfolio in a pw protected area.
yesterday i was with a client of mine, who is also a designer (not graphic tho) and he's done many big projects but he didn't want them on his site, as he hates the idea of having clients "ordering from a menu", ie. stealing elements or wanting exactly the same from a previous project.
I have been in situations like this as well.
Any thoughts?

so you wouldnt show any work on your site then?
- mirola0
that wont stop them ordering from your site though will it, as you'll have to give it them at some point.
- vburo0
only if they request it.
I have had many gigs without having a folio up.
it sorts of feels better as a creative, more carte-blanche-like.. na meen?
- mrdobolina0
yeah, but you will be showing the client work at some point. I just don't see this doing so much, IMO.

if they are gonna order it would be better they order from your work and not from elsewhere,
- mrdobolina0
also, isnt the point of a portfolio to show your work?

Just do itâ„¢

keep the suggestions coming.
anyone experienced in having a "locked up" folio section?
i must also say i am never really happy with my previous work.. :(
- mrdobolina0
sorry Janne, I just dont see the value in locking down your work. from a business standpoint it is limiting you. Also, your work is great, whatchtalkinbout?
- JazX0
good idea
- JazX0
vburo, I've never put any of my own work in a public portfolio. It only goes out to individuals that are willing to spend $_$
- mrdobolina0
what would your site include then?
- mrdobolina0
looks like you have already done it, Janne.
- clerk0
only show the work you're really pleased with.
- vburo0

A lot of product design stuff is a lot more hush, hush.
This is mainly to to there being greater sums of money involved.
...the risk of the idea getting ripped is massive as it could kill the business.
If someone wants to spend a few million on product development, they wont take on that work on the basis of a single portfolio.
As a "business model" not having a portfolio may seem like suicide, but If you've got a heafty set of balls you should be able to make it work.
- vburo0
i guess you are right, stem.
but i used a name he'd not be happy with... it's overlapping garden architecture / floral design / product design / interior design (for the outside duh!) ;)
i have seen some garden furniture he designed yesterday at his studio and it's great, really solid yet very comfortable. and all handmade, thus quite expensive..

He's obviously a good freind (trustworthy & loyal).
Tell him to keep them firmly under wraps until he's ready to sell them.
Most of my mates laugh when I tell them there's a future in Garden's or should I say Exterior domestic spaces?
Sounds interesting...

derek does it
does that tell you anything?
