Just out of curiosity, how is the following quote true?
"also related: photorescue has successfully rescued every photo from accidentally formatted flash cards for me on two different occasions."
If you formatted a flash card, I thought the items got deleted. So how can someone recover stuff from a deleted card??????

not bloody likely.

Formatting any storage device only throws away the directory information that the file system uses to find the files. Your system wont actually delete the files unless you specifically tell it to overwrite with other data (such as a 'security wipe' that writes random data to the whole disk )... So after a simple formatting, you can use a scavenging program to rebuild the directory and recover the files.

ah, makes sense.
thanks for the explanation

if you format a flash card or any other hard drive, the data is still technically there, it just doesnt show up. its not deleted for good untill new data takes it's place. a lot of people make that mistake and end up selling hard drives on ebay with a lot of personal data on them. in order to really delete everything, you need a program that writes random ones and zeros to the hard drive so that it overrides the data.

damn you ribit!

and for anyone that cares... The point of formatting is that it is giving you a totally fresh/clean/uncorrupted 'logical stucture'... not to be confused with the files that you store within that structure.
Which brings me to the bit about folders not really existing... Isnt it wierd that your files arent really 'in' the folders... and that folders use zero space on your drive? (apart from the space used in a single directory file to 'describe' the folders)
Its all an abstraction, metaphor, or story and has nothing to do with where the data is really stored on the disk...
/geek stuff

so folders are more of a path structure to organize your files.
