It's not exactly a joke. This guestbook entry is the key:
"Extremely funny!! I did the same thing to my cat except I used a full size house! What a dummy I was!"
It's showing you, that by keeping a pet cat in your house you're actually doing a very similar thing to what they exagerrate on the site. You say you love your cat and turn it into a fuzzy doll by cutting his balls off, only because you don't like its natural smell.
Humans are monsters.

i think it's for real. used to look at it years ago with my old work mates, then it got shut down for a bit.

nice work, shaft, i never saw it that way... but it does make sense.
- warheros20
elizibethans used secretions from cat anus for perfume.
and i believe bonsai kitties are real.

My cat liked getting his balls cut off. Thinking about it myself.

I think I recall this being a sociology student project. Or maybe I just want to see it as a serious thing, so I made up the sociology part a few years ago.I think that once pet lovers realize that this was aimed at them, to unveil their cruel hipocrisy, the message they get is very strong.
It's a clever scheme:
First people get very emotional and spread the email chain to ban the site and save the cats. Then the joke is unveiled, the roles reversed. They realize that they are the villains who cripple cats and keep them in cages humans call home.
But I think that very few people got the message, most just forwarded the letter and never got the sarcastic joke played on them

hmmm interesting
"But I think that very few people got the message, most just forwarded the letter and never got the sarcastic joke played on them"
i think your right,
- kelpie0
perhaps cos it wasn't very funny and not a particularly earth shattering message?
domesticated animals and humans is an irreversable relationship, it's a bit redundant preaching about it. imo.
- paraselene0
it's one thing to domesticate an animal, it's another thing to be hypocritical about that relationship. claw removal is actually an intensely painful thing for cats. i think they have to break the bones in their paws in order to do it.
- kelpie0
I know what your saying - keep the claws then or don't take a cat for your pet, I'm with you. Also don't agree with keeping Dogs in the city, or birds in a cage.
Houses as cages theory just smacks of easy condecension to me, that's all.
