Someone at work asked me to retouch an old photo. Although when he showed me the photo I thought it was too damaged to be possible. It's very worn and faded and there are thick scratches all over the whole photo so much so that you can harldy see anything. You can't even see the peoples eyes or noses in some places.
Is this possible to retouch at all? He is thinking of taking it to a studio to see if they can do it. Maybe someone here could do it. Who knows.

It's possible, but there will be a heavy amount of illustration involved. Or superimposing faces into that were never there in the original photo.

if you can see what it is then they dont know whatt o expect.. just dive in and get creative, its good practise..

He might have left for the day but when I get a chance I will scan it to see if anyone thinks they can do it.

when damage is too bad retouching becomes more an overpaint job, a lot more expensive if its done with skill but all possible

my grandfather gave me a photo of his brother's last photo before he went to europe for wwII. the bottom corners were gone and it looked like it had been folded a few times, coffee stain and the colors were off.
it took me a while but i reworked it and gave it to my grandfather for his birthday 2 years ago. his brother went down in a bomber and was badly burned, this was his last photo before the accident.
let me see if i can find it.

"becomes more an overpaint job"
That's what I thought but it seems like it would be really hard to get results to where the owner of the picture would agree that this actually looks like his relative.

you should get photos of the close relatives to sample for facial features

good idea ribit. I thought that sounded like an excellent gift too. More than any gift you could've bought from a store. I hope you post it sometime.
