So it's Tiger day in the neighbourhood. 6pm marks the official release. I've had my copy for a week now and must say that the new features are impressive. Since it's Apple's first 64-bit OS, G5's will really scream when running 10.4, but I've noticed that G4's are a little sluggish while running it.
Thankfully the first update, 10.4.1, is on it's way already. Due out sometime in May, the 10.4.1 update includes many optimizations that their software developers couldn't finish before deadline. If you have a G4 and are planning on getting Tiger tonight, don't bother installing it until 10.4.1 comes out. Trust me.

Sluggish how? I've only heard good things about it, with a huge speed bump for older macs compared to 10.3. I plan on getting it today for my PB.
I rule!

Well, as quick as Spotlight is, the Finder's search utility seems to have slowed down a LOT and Spotlight has a tendency to crash your finder if you use it more than 2 or 3 times in a row. The RAM requirement of Tiger has doubled since Panther (256mb). It's a good OS, but there are still things that aren't fully working. if that's okay with you and you're willing to install it on your work machine then I say good luck to you ;)
Personally, me and everyone else in the apple store I work at are all waiting for the update (mainly cause the majority of us use G4's). now what does that tell you? :P

OH yeah, forgot to mention that I have to do a presentation at our store tonight at the launch party for Tiger. Fack, i hate public speaking. I'm gonna poo myself. I have to learn a 17 page document and show a 10 minute Keynote slideshow...
I can feel the turtle head poking out already

Well, ever since I was asked - in an apple store - what type of "internet memory" I have when I came in for troubleshoot assistance, the credibility isn't top notch.
I am here *holds hand by head
Apple store is here *holds hand by kneesAaanyway, I'm installing it. I gots a shoyteload of RAM, *cough , sorry "internet memory".

Running it now on my g4 powerbook. Seems to be running pretty quick, boot up time is a little slower when finder launches after the progress bar, and I find finder sometimes when botting around folders lags for a sec but my apps seem to be running nice.
I hope 10.4.1 fixes any of these tiny slowdowns.
Would like to remove 256 mb from this machine and throw in a 512 stick in addition to the other 256 mb.

boring, boring, boring.
too many threads, too many pbs posts.

just thought i'd give a little heads up about the drawbacks of upgrading so soon for G4 users. oh and when you first install you need to wait for spotlight to index everything, which can take half an hour.
o_O
* 10.4.1 should fix any of those lags as far as I know. Apparently they needed to make deadline so they pushed it out the door before full optimizations were completed.

Appreciate the gesture, fifty50. I guess I'm just too weak..
"Hey dude, here's a Ferrari but listen, don't drive it until the engine update gets here in.. um, i dunno, weeks, months.."

hah fair enough. it's a nice system though that's for sure. can't blame you for wanting to install it straight away. The RSS Feed Screensaver is pretty chill, and i'm looking forward to really seeing what Automator can do.
- sAvcy0
how much will it retail for?
- JazX0
Ohhhhhhhhhhhhh *yawn
