How do I create a 404 page for a site hosted with...wait for it, British Telecom!
- k770
i'd use a combo of html and gif's :P

depends but you could try using a .htaccess file with:
ErrorDocument 404 h t t p : / / www.yourdomain.com/yourpath/404...kill the spaces.

Yeah, I tried that one but the server will not let me upload a file that begins with "." so .htaccess cannot be performed...and obviously BT "technical support" don't know what the hell I'm going on about!

haha mu, maybe you should have read the thread first.

Anyone else got any ideas?

what happens / what page do you get right now? just the server message? if so, you could try just uploading just a 404.html file (some servers can be configured that way).

Name your file htaccess without the dot.
Then change the name once its on the server. Works fine with my MediaTemple stuff.
- rabattski0
hehe that's clever.

my server has a directory at the root for all error messages.
So, my file is "404.shtml" in that dir.
May want to poke around with the FTP and see if you have something like that.TR1

Nope, still no luck. Tried all of the above and none seem to work. I had already thought of changing the name when the file had been uploaded but the server does not allow files that begin with "." as the prefix.
Anyone?

call the hosting firm.
- rabattski0
so what 404 page do you get right now?
- CFish0
I'm getting the default BT one which basically says - go away!
I have called them but they have no idea why or how to change it to my 404 page.
- rabattski0
is that on your own creativefish site?
- CFish0
No, sorry it is on "thecreativec.com"
- rabattski0
ok. are you talking with their regular helpdesk? i'd say try to get in contact with the more technical guys because they should know what you want, for an own domain you should be able to create your own error pages, how easy it is depends on what they are running, if it's a *nix machine it's dead easy to reconfigure it and/or demand that you should be able to upload .files. imo having your own 404 is part of any standard package. anyways, try to skip the regulars.

If its a bare-bones service 'thrown in' with your broadband, they might not give you even these basic features (for example my ISP gives me space, but I cant point the domain of my choice at it, except by forwarding)....Is there a product information page for this hosting on their website?
- rabattski0
true. the actual site could also be a redirect to www.yourisp.com/folder/ which makes it even harder to get your own 404 because basically the current 404 is setup for everyone and can't really be customized per folder.
