not so "clean"

I've been using very clean layouts and designs for my portfolio for years now. So it's a little disheartening to see it as a huge trend.
I definitely miss those crazy experimental sites, especially the ones that did crazy motion stuff without using flash.
Some that use flash:

yeah, i checked out jeedub's site when it was online and the face stuff was crazy. i thought it was pretty unique too.

u see, the problem with the "super simple and clean" apporch has almost becoming THE only method to solve a design problem...(everyting from bank website to Ganstar rap website is looking the same now) the problem is... someone may design something that LOOK simple, but its not as easy to use as it look.
respect to the project that may look visualy rich and engaging, but simple to use at the same time.

its easy to make things just look simple... but its take way more skills to make something complex to something feel refined and engaging to use without losing its form and function.

i kept my layout pretty simple and used a different kind of navigation.
it works for me.

that last example was the opposite of simple...different yes.

totally agree with, Don.
haha, couldn't be further from simple.
nice though.

the key word is different here...
the only problem with being different, is the design or method you come up with will either be horribly ugly, or catch on as a trend, and get played out...

ok setsolid.
i would agree more if you had a portfolio of your own.
(sorry if it was said above, i didn't feel like reading)

i thought it was totally simple. i guess we have different points of reference, though.

i agree with you... i desgin my folio like 3 times... only grow to hate it at mid of the stage... and restat again to make it better...then i decide... why do i have to make a folio? so i decide to make a personal site to be my creatvity playground. and so far .. it works. folio is about your work... so its hard to put too much "work" around your work haha because its just don't work :P hahaha

When I do something creativity I am naturally just attracted to simple designs. I guess that isn't really thinking outside of the box.
At the same time, if something becomes a trend I try to avoid it as much as possible.
My next layout is definitely simple, but uses scripts (dhtml) to make it seem different.
Sites that are just REALLY simple aren't appealing. The ones that seem like no thought was put into it, I mean.

just do new shit everyday!

even its not a new idea, but i think this is great:
its more about your own creative play ground, then about showing working... this way, your desgin impove.

yeah that is great, redfridge.
