Font Book Woes :(

Hello
Recently I installed some fonts into Font Book (mac OSX 10.3.8), these worked fine in all applications. However, when I shut the computer down, restart it some parts of the fonts family (bold, black, regular, etc.. different 'weights' missing with each font installed) do not appear in Font Book or in any applications. They are still present in the Macintosh HD>Library>Fonts folder when I open that.
I have installed them through font book and tried to copy them straight into the folder, but this makes no difference.
The issue is fixed by using the fontfinagler, or manually removing the preferences and font cache. But the problem returns as soon as I shut the computer down.
What is going on, do i have a ghost living in my mac eating fonts?
Any help would be much appreciated.

font book is awful. its fucked up my computer exponentially.

fb is not tolerant of duplicate names and id's, and likes to move fonts into the library>fonts folder regardless of where you add them from.
the solution: use suitcase or font agent pro
