it's a great book, but I think some of you have missed the point somewhat. The initial reason for writing it was to dispeal theories that certain groups or races of people are genetically superior to others. He proves this to be completely untrue (rightly so) expands on his theories.
And it is Euro-Asian-centric because, based on his thesis, those are the dominant cultures that have dictated the direction of the world today.
It's not so much about resources either, it's about transfer of knowlegde being tied to geology and agriculture, (I'm paraphrasing because its been a while since I read it) but he talks about it being easier to spread across the longitude of eurasia than any other land mass on the planet.
Great book and worth a read, I've read it a couple of times now and it's still interesting.
Pick up Conscilence too if you like some of those theorys, and Emergence? I read them round the same time, they all seemed to tie in quite nicely.
