Some folks at work linked this up for me:
http://www.scantips.com/no72dpi.…
Now the question is, is it rubbish, or is there some underlying truth there?
The folks at work have all been converted to this new way of thinking, but I'm not so sure -- the three image files are all the same physical files size, despite being different resolutions.
Something gives...
What do you all think?

OMG

it's about how many pixels there are, and thats as far as I cant be arsed explaining.

hahahahahaha, comic sans, i laugh at thee.

72 DPI represents 640X480 on a 14" monitor. in some ways what he says is true. however, try copying or importing a 72DPI and a 300DPI with the same number of pixels from photoshop to flash or freehand--you will get a scaled image. so, while he's right as to how video works--some graphic software doesn't work that way.

Of course all 3 images are the same exact bitmap. Pixels per inch refers obviously only effects the printed image when you specify the same pixel dimensions on screen. What is his point?
72 dpi is a standard. he is suggesting we only specify pixels and not care about dpi... it doesn't make sense. I've saved images from the web that were 1dpi. Of course I had to resize them in photoshop to something reasonable without any loss, just a resample. but why not stay with a standard screen res?

i like the little no 72 dpi logo. in fact i like it so much that i'll make it my profile picture (at 72 dpi no less).
- tymeframe0
this guy i worked with used to save his web images at 73dpi..."for a tighter pixel ratio" he says.
a what?
- grafholic0
yeah i'd like to see some argument about 72dpi vs 73dpi.

He is right though (in spite of the comic sans)...72 DPI is a myth (or a 'standard for the want of something better' at the most).
My screen doesnt show 72 DPI.
My Powerbook shows 96DPI
My Palm shows 212DPI
All the images on our website have no DPI set by us and the default in our cataloguing software is 300 DPI or whatever we choose to set...it just doesnt matter if you arent squeezing ink onto dead trees.
