Currently in my CSS file, i have defined a specific to have scrollbars if the content exceeds the available space. In the case that the content doesn't exceed ot fill the available space, the scroll bars still appear (sometimes grayed out, depending on the browser). Is there any way (using Javascript or CSS) to not show the scrollbars unless necessary AND to choose which bars (horizontal and/or vertical) get rendered?

arrrgh.... :(

normally a scrollbars:auto will do that for you. (assuming that you are talking about a frame or iframe)

http://gltss.org/2003.html you can sniff out the code/css there, though i already see that firefox and IE display differently. it's probably more pain than worth it...

Damn..that site is having the same problem.
Anyone have a suggestion? other methods of doing this?

you could try javascript. From inside the iFrame pass the scrollheight and scrollwidth onLoad to a function in the parent window that resizes the iFrame appropriately...

It's not an iframe though. Just a div layer

Place an iframe inside of your div and make sure you set the div dimensions explicitly, and equal to the size of the iframe.

ok cool, I'll try that. Any other ideas?

display: auto thing would work.
as far as the color definition goes, i've never seen that working with browsers other than IE - it's the only thing IE is compatible with.
weird.
