the whole western world has become more racist over the last couple of years, focussed on mostly one religion group...
:(
anyhow! Amsterdam is fun, but so is Arnhem
:)

I have to disagree. Though I agree this is true for certain parts of The Netherlands, Amsterdam is still very liberal and has not (yet) embraced Fortuynism / populism as for example Rotterdam has done. Though you may be right that there is a "focus on mostly one enthic group." I don't think that is different in any other western cities (incl US). Besides, this focus is not so much racially motivated, but more a result of differences in educational attainment.
Over 50% of A'dam citizens is from an ethnic minority today, so in the next decade, we'll all be minorities.

i've seen plenty of fortuynism in amsterdam as well. agreed though it's a worldwide effect not necessarely in just 1 country.

berlin, london, nyc, hong kong, jakarta.. they all kick ass.. it's not always where you at, it's also about what you do.

and the grass is always greener on the other side :)

well, they're not racist as long as you are not black, north african, jewish or arabic.
and having lived in quite a few places around the world: yes, it is a very racist city.

"Plus they treat foreigners like shit, but maybe it's different if you're an american caucasian."
hey, thanks so much for the sweeping generalization.
tit.

Amsterdam is not the KKK. Don't generalize for all people, what you're saying is that Janne, Folkert, Me and alot of other people on NT are racistic bastards then, because we come, live or enjoy amsterdam?
All cities have a "problem" or things that you like and/or dislike, but generalizing has brought the world alot of bad communication which ended up in stuff like war etc.
- vburo0
exactly. i had my car broken open in antwerp 5 times in the short period i lived there... true the city there has a huuuge crime-rate and the police are pretty useless as well.. but that did not make me blame my friends over there as well. I still love Antwerp.
Every major city has its pro's and its cons.. but don't fucken generalize.
people are offended by that here.
that's why i said n*gg* to you.. so that i hoped to piss you off as much as you did me..

my wife and i went to amsterdam about 3 years ago...we absolutely loved it..
on the way there, we sat beside this cute 'girl next door' type...we chatted with her, and asked her about the city and whatnot..she told us a few museums to check out, and oh, by the way stay away from 'blah blah' because it's nothing but filthy foreigners'hahah..oh my gawd....
me wife shot me this quick glance like 'holy shit, did we just hear that?'
i just smiled and nodded and pretended to look like i was still listening..my best buddies little brother lived there for a few years...when he came back, all he could talk about was how great a city it was, and what a shame they let (yep, you guessed it) filthy foriegners in to ruin it all...
now..here's my take on this..
1) the girl was about 18 or so, and as white as milk...could be she was a bit of an over protected type kid and sheltered and not used to mixed company type of thing...2) my best friend from my highshcool days is awesome, but his little brother was always a total asshat, and tended towards bigotry even before he left canada to go to amsterdam..
and while we were there?
my wife and i had the TIME OF OUR LIVES! its a beautiful city, and the people were nothing short of wonderful...you get jerks and racist types everywhere you go..
Amsterdam has em..sure...but name me one city that doesn't..anyhow, i'd love to go back..
it was waaaay to much fun..

you must not forget exador1 that amsterdam people have no problems at all with swearing and calling people names that doesn't mean it's autom. racist.
- vburo0
hahaha, yeah, Dutch people have an extremely big mouth, that's true.
but we are actually pretty nice once you get to know us.
big mouth, small heart; is sort of the saying here eh?
- snuggles0
no dice on the chat stuff Joeri but I'll send you an email soonish :)
- rabattski0
exactly. which doesn't mean there no racist but you have to filter thru the cultural discrepancies and especially real amsterdammers swear extremely a lot. x-ref: diseases.

I found the people in Amsterdam the nicest people in europe, well out of the places I've been, Germany, Spain, UK and France....
