Pixels to Inches Conversion:
1 inch / 72 pixels = x inches / 500 pixels
x = 6.94 inchesetc.
Miles to Inches Conversion:
40 mile = 5280 feet
40 miles = (4) * (5280) * (12)
40 miles = 2534400 inches

In a square mile, or in a line a mile long?
And no matter what, the answer will be the same I gave to that nice Officer when he pulled me over and asked how many beers I had - "All of them."

assuming you set your monitor to its actual 1:1 pixel settings the following will work:
use the inch indicator to set your monitor if you have a ruler around.
inch/mile: [556kb]

http://pixeltwins.com/online/nt/…outer stratosphere: [29.3mb]
i didn't upload this one but it is 54 miles long

just to add some perspective to the situation:
typing a mile of underscores "_" by holding "Shift" and "-" would take approximately 6.4 hours to complete one mile
also, considering a fullscreen 1024*768 browser window;
while scrolling from left to right of the mile in your browser, each pixel the scrollbar moves is equal to 5.15625 feet or 61.875 inches or 4455 pixels of the mile passing
inch/mile: [556kb]

http://pixeltwins.com/online/nt/…*Safari users seem to experience breaks that cause it to scroll down, instead of across, however opening the files in ff, ie, or saving them and opening with a text editior will display them properly*
