with in-house the only thing is that the work can get boring. same "brand identity" same pantone same copy.

Depends on the agency or the company obviously. So far I think agencies are better. You've got a little more cred and flexibility when you leave for another job. Managing multiple clients is a skill in itself, they teach you that. I think agencies give you more support/resources too.

both have +/-
I work inhouse, granted I work with the same brand all the time, but I also get paid overtime, have no CD, and can do all the freelance I want.

I work In-House and I'm sick of it...
I worked for a small web shop before this and enjoyed the work a lot more (variety) and I enjoyed it more.
However sick I am of my current job though, it pays alright compared to others I'd get and I wouldn't leave it till debts are gone.

I work in-house, it all depends on what you want to do. I have noticed that deadlines and scheduling are much more lenient in-house than when working for an agency.
but really, it all depends on what you want.

i've been at the same in-house for a few years (which is why i cited boredom earlier). but i just got notice that i get four fucking weeks of vacation a year now!

in-house will kill your soul a little everyday. unless there is an actual in-house team. if you are the only designer there then i would not recommend it.

yeah...being a 1 man in-house design dept starts to suck after a while. Yeah, you are pretty much the CD/AD/Jr/Sr Deisgner and account manager of artworks, but like everyone else said, same old brand every day gets boring. Each time I've had an in-house position, I don't feel like I grow as a designer...where as when u work at an agency, your creativity can also be fueled by other creative minds around you. Its much better for credibitility and your portfolio as well...especially if you have a diverse body of work from numerous clients. Then again, working on deadlines at an agency can be strenuous as well, and be prepared to do 50+ hrs a week.
