Cinema 4d Lighting

I created these turntables in Cinema 4d for my client, and I didn't build it with any heavy geometry. When I render a frame with out lighting it takes about 20 seconds. Then when I turn my 3 lights on it takes about 3 minutes a frame. I might add I am using area shdows with the lights, but still 3 minutes per/frame. Seems pretty long. Does anyone have any suggestions of what might speed up a render. I have a pretty heavy duty G5 so I know it's not the machine alone?

3 minutes a frame is not bad at all, in general, rendering is an overnight job (or one for the render farm like we do here)
But if you're in a pinch, use shadow maps instead of area shadows.

Yeah, I just figured out what the hold up was. Using area shadows instead of hard or soft shadow really cranks up the render times. Never used shadow maps though. Are they accessed through the lighting info? Thanks.

i'm not sure in C4d. 3D in general:
area= get a natural fade farther away from object, takes a long time.
raytracing= hard edge, very accurate. second longest time.
shadow map= actually uses a map to create a shadow, not very accurate but very fast.

I don't use Cinema 4d, I used XSI, and they are all essentially the same thing.
3 minutes for a scene with area lights is definitely feasible. They definitely slow down renders. You may find you can get away with lowering the samples of the area lights--provided C4D allows for it.
