i despise guns. here's why.
1. 12th grade, friend from childhood murdered by classmate from spanish class.
2. father's best friend commited suicide. my father found him moments after the fact. (literally moments. i'll skip the details)
3. close friend's little brother commited suicide.
4. childhood friend shot dead BUT he also shot and killed the guy that shot him (!)... pretty crazy.
Let it be known that I am not a fanatical anti-gun person but I personally hate, hate, hate guns for (hopefully) obvious reasons.

P.S. - why do you blame 'guns' instead of the 'murderer'. Had he not had a gun, he would have used a knife, baseball bat, etc. At least with a gun, the family probably didn't suffer.

just-jeff, while I am in the middle about the gun issue (I support the right to own/use firearms, but I think it should be more difficult and more strictly enforced)...
your arguement fails because of the utility, the convenience, a gun provides. It's quick and easy to kill someone in the heat of the moment with a gun.

The story in question was a police officer killing his wife and kids while they slept in the middle of the night.
There is no such thing as 'in the heat of the moment' when the victims are sleeping. It was premeditated, and had he not had a gun, he likely would have beaten them - a far worse way to die, in my humble opinion.
That aside, it misses the issue in a way I feel most of society misses the issue. The issue isn't about whether or not you should be allowed to have an object, it's about who you make responsible? Do you allow people to be responsible for themselves, or do you have the government rule your life and dictate what is best for you.
I, personally, prefer responsibility for one's own actions.

That's a very stupid arguement to support guns.
Also, humans are irresponsible, irrational, emotional creatures. Government is neccessary in matters of handing out killing machines. There is no amount of idealism you can profess that can change anyone's mind in the face of so much irresponsible and sad behavior by humans, aided by guns. So to that, I say more intervention is needed.

And you're right, if the murder was premeditated and he was crazy enough to do it, then it's questionably what difference the absence of a firearm would have had. But then take into account other premeditated events like Columbine.
