sorry about the link. it's not the crater i was talking about. if you zoom out and zoom in around the area where the brown mountains meet the green you will see that the so called "area 51" is sort of blurry.

I guess I don't see what you mean but area 51, groom lake, is a testing ground. new things have to be tested somewhere, right

Google maps is an interface that accesses data compiled from satellites taking photographs of our planet.
So basically we are talking about thousands upon thousands of images taken from satellites - these images are taken at differen't times - therefore the lighting is different between the two sets of data.
