trying to decide on a new hosting company for work. i do not care about the cheapest, i want the best. who is better?
i seem to remember DH not having phone support, is this true?

true (dreamhost) they don't have phone support, but they are super fast on replying to your gripes and problems by email. I use them and I've never had a problem with them and I'm in the UK.

I host all my stuff at dreamhost - and we're starting to refer/get clients to host there as well - very good service and the price vs package is very good!
if i'm correct they're beta testing phone support, but yeah - the email support is super good.

ive been with other hosters, and (mt) is killer.
their support is awesome. i would say that their hosting plans, and the control that they give their clients is not seen with any other hoster.
if there is a problem, they will bend over backwards to make it happen

anyone who says that (mt) is all about the hype has no idea what they are talking about. those are people who have never hosted with (mt), and are simply hating on them cause they never got sposored, or never made it in the industry, working in a corporate in-house team, getting pissed off in their cubicle.

i've used Rackspace for clients before. hands down the best hosting company i have seen to date. been w/ and used many others, but you absolutly get what you pay for w/ Rackspace.
if you are debating between DreamHoast (whick i love) and (mt), Rackspace is not even on the table for discussion. they don;t exactly offer a "$7.95/ month w/ free spam filter!!"and such....

i guess i have some say in this as i've used many of the hosting companies stated in the thread...for my personal stuff, dreamhost is f*cking great! their prices are super low, the support is great (and yes they are working on beta testing phone support) and the newsletters alone are worth the price of admission. not only that but they are always quick to adopt new technologies and usually give it all away for free to customers (they also run fantastic specials for customers -- like tripling storage, bandwidth, etc).
we use mediatemple for a local entertainment guide because we just wanted to try them out. it's turned into a great relationship as their service is top notch. while their pricing is a tad higher for my personal tastes, since i don't foot the bill for the site, it's perfect.
lastly, a company i work with likes to use hostway for their sites. this has to be one of the crappiest companies i've ever had the misfortune to work with. not only are their packages more expensive, but they usually come with MUCH less of everything (email addys, storage, bandwidth, features, etc). additionally, you have to pay a monthly fee (on the lower packages) to have mysql and php "turned on" (and then you have to install phpMyAdmin yourself -- not a big deal but shitty nonetheless). last, and certrainly least, their phone support is horrid. if you're on the lower packages you have to email for support (no phone support for you)...even if you're on a gold plus package, you'll have to sit on hold for sometimes up to 45 minutes (no joke!) just to talk to someone who hardly speaks english who will try and make you feel like a piece of shit.
the verdict: dreamhost if price and value is a concern (almost always), media temple if money isn't an issue, hostway if someone has your genitals in a vice and has future plans to make life a living hell...happy host hunting!
