I'd say DJs are even more alive with the advent of new technology. Half of the tech stuff you hear on CD just comes from DJs being recorded or doing their own recordings themselves. ie, Daft Punk, etc. Not sure what you meant about that..?

the 'dj' is a strange thing nowadays and if you ask around clubs, radio stations, podcasters etcetc nobody 'really' knows what the next few years hold.
who is going to be putting the sounds out of speakers that 'the kids are in to nowadays' over the next couple of years is anybodys guess. hiphp has all the kids right now - a scribble book and a mic are the new 1210s and a tapedeck...
