OK, so I'm sure I'm being dumb here, but is the Newtoday font just bold Helvetica? And, if so, why does it look so much better than when I try to repeat it in Flash?

there are a lot of different cuts of it... they might also write their flash movies to screen using BEST rather than HIGH that can make a lot of difference...
even size can change things...are you trying it at a reasonable size?
I have found that when doing dynamic stuff like this that has reason parameter ...e.g you know what the text is within reason that it is best to import it from freehand... you will find a much better render of the text you need

it's not Helvetica
Typography is more than the type, correct kerning does a lot but not many take the time

depends on his priorities... if a font isn't rendering nicely then its not rendering nicely
