Hey guys...I'm screwed. please help!
When exporting a book in Indesign (to a PDF, Press setting), the pdf that is produced is missing certain graphics.
It looks like the graphics missing are embedded PDFs..either parts of them, or entirely.
No, it's not consistent. out of 40-50 embedded pdfs...only 3 are giving me problems. They're all the same.
Is this a bug? Does anyone know a solution?
So weird, so frustrating.
Thank you all in advance for saving my ass!

did you try saving those pages as postscripts and distilling in Distiller?
- Gorbie0
do you get white boxes?
maybe you are using transparency effects over grandients or spot colors.
that's a no no.
- mayo0
open those pdfs in Illustrator and resave as an eps.
- bgheen0
I think saving as an EPS is the way to go!
Thanks Mayo!
Do you think it's just a bug?
- Gorbie0
you may be prolonging an error that will show up when it gets to prepress... but if you want them to work it out for you... go ahead.
- bgheen0
Any idea what that might be gorbie?
They aren't spots or transparencies.

saving as eps will definitely help, also are you using drop shadows or effects?
- tim5250
why don't you 'package' the file and see if InDesign raises any flags.
- Gorbie0
ohhh... if the graphics in the embedded PDF's use ZIP compression or OPI this stuff will happen.
I use pitstop to change those settings inside the PDF's
- bgheen0
Since they were supplied I have no way of knowing if the ZIP compression or OPI stuff is to blame.
Will the demo version of Pitstop be enough to fix those problems?
(Thanks for your help!)
- bgheen0
And no, Indesign raised zero flags. I didn't package though, just did a preflight.
- bgheen0
Thenuge - Nope, no drop shadows...or effects that I can see..but then again, these pdfs were supplied by someone else.
- tim5250
is this a file you built? if so, why not just place those images again?
- Gorbie0
it sounds like OPI or ZIP and/or JPEG compression.
they can work this out in prepress i would assume. I'm not sure what the trial version will do for you.
you could contact you printer and ask them.
- bgheen0
I see. I'm sending the press the PDF though, not a packaged book.
- Gorbie0
also try changing the indesign pdf compression settings to "none" instead of the automatic that it is by default.
test one of the problem pages.
- bgheen0
damn...changing compression to "none" didn't do anything
- bgheen0
ok saving it out as an EPS from Illustrator might not work...because I don't have the fonts (which is odd, InDesign didn't indicate that they weren't embedded...so we have to assume they are).
- Gorbie0
i'm sorry.. i gotta run.
but if this can wait til tomorrow, you can email me one of the problematic PDF's and i'm pretty sure i can fix it.
mailto:gorbie@hellobubba.com
otherwise.. let the printer know what kind of difficulties you're having and i'm sure they will be able to sort it out with you.

Maybe I should have it a 300dpi PSD and be done with it...
Bad move?
