I'm planning on moving across the country, sometime this year, from Philly to SF.
Any advice? I'm gonna ditch/sell all my furniture, so I can basically fit everything I own into a trailer. But I don't have an SUV to tow that across the country. What about shipping? Or freight? Has anyone else done this? I don't even know the first step to take!

some places will charge by the square foot, so shipping a bag of feathers would cost the same as a bag of lead.

freight. search google, there are many places that offer services for long distance moves.

sell everything, then buy it again
have the furniture stores put your furniture together in your new home

you can rent a truck, but thadalota $$
sounds like a great trip though, good luck :)

maybe you can cross the country by bicycle. then document the whole thing. you know, you pulling the trailer and all that and maybe living in it too.

man, i've done this like twice now, i swear each new job = less stuff and a tour of the country. i got rid of most of my stuff twice. everything i didn't take or get rid of i stored at my parents house. everything else, i pack into my pickup. as unfashionable as it is, a truck with a campershell is my best friend...man you can haul some shit.

My friend, who is a vegan gutter punk, asked me to weld a bike trailer for his pitbull so he could ride accross country on his blke. He did it too.

i moved to sf from kansas last september i sold everything before i left including one of my cars, the other i left in ks. i shipped out my comp, dvds and assorted other electronics that fit into the 2 boxes my comp was shipped and another for the rest
you dont need a car here unless you dont like public trans but its everywhere here and everyone uses it
i dont miss driving a bit
i shoved all my clothes in a military duffle bag and flew out here with my personal belongings, mementos, camera, etc in two carry ons

i moved from SF to NY and used ABF freight... cheapest i could find.
they bring a trailer to you, you load it up, they pick it up and deliver to your new place where you unload. cost me about 900 bucks, which is cheaper than any rental and far easier.

I rented a 17" Uhaul and just took it all man. It did cost me like $1000 total from NC to Salt Lake, but when I got here I had all my shit and didn't have to try to start all over.

good idea to get rid of your furniture. you can get whatever you need off of craigslist.
