great article indeed. halfway now.
btw. i always thought the Dyson is ugly as hell.. but hey it works. form follows function eh?
- vburo0
"2. Functionality, in a post-protestant culture, is a moral value in itself, and makes a covert appeal to authenticity. What's functional is good to the extent that we value the utilitarian, the empirical, the pragmatic. These are core metaphysical values in protestant and post-protestant cultures. The value of things working is all tied up with the value of work, the 'work ethic'. Values like decoration and aestheticism are seen as 'Catholic', indulgent, feminine, subjective."
yes.. true dat.

i'm confused again.
he's not a designer. He's arty farty muscianist cum cultural commentator
- tny0
his journal is new to me
- clerk0
why does that make you confused kes?
- ********0
since when has momus been a graphic designer? what the hells he doing talking knowledgeably about graphic design?
is this not confusing to you?
i used to be a big fan of his music when i was 16/17 (for a month or two)
I don't understand what's going on . :/
What does he know about design?
- clerk0
he's been writing about design a long time now, and imho he has a very good understanding of it all. apparently he knows some because rick poynor and michael beirut let him be a contributing writer at design observer.

oh my god.
i am seriously weirded out.
that guy is a serious polymath.
the last time i ever heard anyone mention the name momus, the last time i listened to one of his records was 8 years ago. And when someone does mention him, it's to do with design.
madness!
- madeGB0
much prefer rick poyner's ramblings...
- clerk0
hehe yeah kes he's the renaissance man.
- vburo0
What does he know about design?
Kes
(Apr 6 05, 06:40)i don't think you need to be a designer to be able to strongly observe tendencies in another 'craft'.. as a matter of fact it did not surprise me to see he is not a designer; sometimes designers can be so locked up in their own professional limited horizon that it needs an outsider to observe certain tenedencies from afar.
- clerk0
btw kes he's playing live in london at colliers wood april 26 and at bush hall april 27.

it's not that vburo. It's just i used to be into him as a teenager cos he seemed to know something about everything. Like he was deeply read in politics, literature, history, art etc and did all this music stuff as well, and inspired me somewhat at that tender age to read into all this stuff. Then i leave all that teenagedom behind and get into design, and he follow me into that too!
i'm kinda pissed off actually seeing him as a contributing writer on the design observer. ha
