does anyone here rate pitchfork at all? personally i think the site's reviewers blow. critics are 'meant' to be able to review art / media intelligently, even if it's not their particular taste YET their reviews are often insane? i mean, if a born again christian reviewed a marilyn manson cd obviously it'll get a bad review but that doesn't necessarily mean it's a bad cd surely?
just my opinion and i'm looking for others thoughts!

i only check the best of list every year and i usually agree with the choices.

I like pitchfork. I think their reviews are usually really intelligent.

and i should add here that i'm a tool fan and am carrying a grudge from a review of lateralus years ago so i'm thinking my view is skewed. it just seems some reviews aren't done with a level of open mindedness the should be.

ok, if you're into tool i can see your frustration, pitchfork is clearly on a totally different trip.

I think for the most part, the reviews are a lot tougher on the artists than anywhere else.
They don't throw their scores around lightly.

yeah they're good points. i think i need to get over it and keep checking it. i usually go through www.metacritic.com anyway so who cares.

I'm judging based on their reviews on Chemical Brothers alone...
Pretty accurate, I'd say:

pitchfork is pretentious grovel.
sure, the reviews are well written but music is criticized for the sake of being criticized. it is cool to hate.
- airey0
see lifeinbinary that's what i thought about the site but i always worry my own bullshit gets in the way and blinds me to some good stuff. still not sure.

everyone has different tastes and there is no way one reviewer can express anything but his own opinion. i am fine with that and reviews are mere opinions, i understand - but on pitchfork almost anything that becomes big (or goes even remotely mainstream) gets hated on.
the article "Rebel Sell" comes to mind.

sometimes they loose control..... I think.....

the point of different journalists is to have different opinions. you may not agree with it, but you can bet someone else feels the same way. you're probably not going to get a bad review out of someone if you keep throwing records of their taste to em. most artists that get cred on pitchfork deserve the cred. and there really are only a handfull of "big albums" that are worth calling big each year. only problem i've ever had recently is the whole "we love the unicorns" fad of 04.

to support your opinion:
unicorns are just great :-)

The unicorns are great (live too).
The problem with pitchfork is that they judge every album by what came before it. They measure everything by the "best" of that artist. Look at the ...Trail of dead reviews to see what I'm talking about. And yeah, they totally and unfairly ripped the shit outta Lateralus.
I still look at the new reviews daily tho. Theyve pointed me towards some really great music.
