I have a virus on my laptop. So sad. I have Norton Antivirus, and it keeps popping up and saying 'repaired high risk virus', but then the pop up keeps popping up. Forever, as long as I'm connected to the internet.
What should I do?
- sparker0
did norton say that it 'removed' the viri? or just quarantined?
you may need to delete the file it is trying to remove manually.
boot safemode and either run norton there and/or manually delete the infected file(s).
- sparker0
you may also want to look on the web (norton's site or similar) for any advanced removal options for said viri.
it may require a special utility to clean it, or you may have to hack the registry.

run MS Anti-Virus Beta on it. What the hell are you running on that machine?
- Jaline0
it said it removed it.
and thanks, keep the tips coming so I can try all of these after school.

wtf

i don't know, i only visit design and news sites. i am so confused. i've decided to move the window off the screen so I can continue to do my work....until i get the problem fixed.

if it's removed and NOT on quarentine, then go to Norton's site. they should have a notice on that virus, maybe a patch... as sparker well said!
- sparker0
what virus is it?
- Jaline0
W32.Valla.2048 (always pops-up, anti-virus said it's removed)
and
bloodhound, or something like that (pops-up once in a while, not removed)

uninstall Norton, so the window will go away

get a mac.
ahahaha
sorry.
- sparker0
yummy. valla is pretty nasty.
it infects win32 files in the windows/winnt and system directories.
binds to the the files directly. but it keeps reinfecting win32 files...which is why you get the pop up. norton isn't catching them all.
removal seems easy enough, though...do in order
1) disable the stupid windows system restore crap
2) make sure you have current virus definitions
3) reboot into safe mode
4) run nortonrestart and see if it gets it all.
'bloodhound' is a norton variable appended to a virus found that norton doesn't have a definition for.
basically, norton doesn't know what the virus/exploit is...so it calls it bloodhound.xxxx
make sure you have the latest definitions.

There's a few decent patches on MS for the bloodhound virus's. Had 6 a while back 'cause of fecking outlook express?!
- sparker0
i have 0 sympathy for people who get viri because they use outlook express.
every creditable computer professional will tell you it is the most wortless piece of shit, easily exploitable mua.
if you're a ms fan boy, use the full outlook mua. if not, then use something at least partially secure and stable...thunderbird, pine, mutt, something.
we actually have a policy forbidding the use of outlook express on any work related machine...including personal laptops of sales associates.

rub some vicks vapor rub on it.
- madeGB0
not on my comp. at the moment using *gulp peecee. me dad installed service pack 2 and outlook express decided to re-emerge.
used to be pretty superior with my mac until my bro. proved me wrong in a bet and hacked the f**k outta my imac - since taken out my airport extreme card....

i just installed service pack 2 this morning b/c i was afraid to before.
i ran safe mode and Norton found 7 items that it didn't find before. It fixed 6 of them and I quarantined the last one (it's the Bloodhound).
Hopefully my baby will be okay now. *tears

i'm assuming you're running XP since you installed SP2.
Option 1:
1. Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete key all at once. Click on Task Manager.2. Select Processes tab. Write down all the apps that's running there. You can skip obvious stuff like iexplorer.exe or Outlook.exe.
3. GOOGLE SEARCH EVERY FILE NAME that appeared under task manager. see if anyone discuss about possible virus.
4. Google search ways to manually remove them. This also means you'll be messing with registry. BACK UP first.
5. removal. However, if your HD is completely fucked, removal may not work (or you can remove but the thing keeps coming back).
Option 2:
reformat and reinstall OS.::after everything::
make sure you're up to date on windows update. update your virus definition and SCAN SCAN SCAN. install adware/spyware and constantly monitor your machine on daily or weekly basis. install firewall is possible. make sure you set up user permission to your machine so your roommate/family/house guests won't fuck with your computer.
start using browsers like firefox which has added security.sorry this is happening.
but remove it soon, so you won't spread the virus to others...

I've actually been doing a lot of that stuff. So we'll see. I backed up my important stuff just in case.
I can always get it fixed, but it's obviously just a pain.
