All their albums up to the black album is some of the greatest metal ever. no contest.
I wasn't a big fan of the black album so it ended at 'and justice for all' for me, but I'll give them the black album. After that they seriously sucked in my opinion.
I always hoped for the day when they get pissed off and bring back what metal is really about...

" I always hoped for the day when they get pissed off and bring back what metal is really about..."
it's hard to be wealthy, aging, and apparently tired and still know what metal is really about.

the tick
toronto, young st. cool record store...
most likely you were in 'the record peddlar'
one of my fav places back in the day..
if you were looking for hard to find metal, bootlegs of pinkfloyd, or just about anything cool, thats where you went..
first time i ever heard metallica was in 84 when ride the lightning came out..
it blew my fucking mind..
went out with my older brother and we immediately bought kill em all..
there were no liner notes or lyrics, so we spent ages trying to discipher what the fuck james was screaming..
years later when we i finally saw the real lyrics, i was surprised how off we were..
;)great stuff, great memories..
too bad they suck now.then again, i'm biased..
i kind of lost interest in most metal about halfway through highschool..
suddenly started listening to floyd, zepplin and tull...
which lead to stuff like cocteau twins and killing joke etc..
suddenly there was a lot more interesting stuff to hear ....still tho..
Orion is an incredible piece of music..still really love that one..and maiden still rocks.
scream for me longbeach!
;)ex

I so really wanted to like St. Anger. Sounded like a bunch of bad QOTSA outtakes with a crappy snare drum. But as bad as it was, it still was an improvement over anything they've done since Justice.
I bought Some Kinda Monster. I enjpyed it for what it was. Not sure who's the bigger shit though - James or Lars. And Kirk is just too far gone...
I still Love Grage Days (Revisited). Nothing says summertime metal than crusing in my jeep with the top down blasting "I killed your baby today..."
Weid how Slayer still sound great (and Pantera..well...you know), but all of the other big 'uns got tired - Anthrax, Megadeth, Exodus, etc..

And you know what - I was playing some Metallica back on my MP3 player and I realized how topical some lyrics were visavis the current Bush Admin/ Iraq War- "Disposable Heroes", Justice for all...
Made me think they were almost, ALMOST. politically conscious.

speaking of Metallica and record stores....
I remeber seeing a poster in a record store years ago of a European Metallica tour that had the Beatsie Boys on the bill.
Has anyone seen that poster??

I saw them on acid in 82 at Billy Barty's Roller Rink w/Mustaine in Anaheim. First time they played Whiplash.
That first 'Hit the Lights' demo is hilarious. Lars chokes on the first drum fill and the fart on the end is nice.

Lamb of Gof I dig, Arch Enemy - good, Shadow's Fall, Children of Bodom..etc..
But Mastodon? I can't get into them at all. They're like sucky Stoner Rock. I rememeber when Metallica, Anthrax, et al. were hot the first time around and then you had sucky bands like St. Vitus or Venom, who were like sucky verisons of Motorhead (Lemmy = God) anyway. Mastodon remind me of them.
