I'm an architect, not a web designer, but I've been helping my friend update his site over the last few years. We want to do an overhaul. Any suggestions on ways to improve the site in the next go round. Constructive Criticism appreciated. Here's the site: http://www.nathanbeckner.com

1. drop the cheesy early 90's flash intro
2. Make the text legible
3. Actually stop using flash all together
4. Get rid of the scrollbars
5. Actually I would suggest starting from scratch again...it's a bit of a mess to be honest...photos are good though...

photos are awesome, need to utilize that
i would start from scratch. try to avoid flash and less cowbells is more cowbells

simplify. simplify.
music isn't working at all. i couldn't turn it off....
the flash looks like you put together a bunch of random source files from flashkit. it doesn't look very custom.
get ride of the rounded corners.

yeah...the music isn't working for me...
at the very least, turn it down. It's very loud when it starts.

make it static, and css-sy.

Drop the flash all together... stick to html.
Make the photos really prevalent and easy to navigate.
Thats all you need.

so why is flash so bad now? I realize why mine is bad (not utilizing the pictures, etc), but why is flash hated in general?
- arthur0
Flash isn't so bad (my site is all Flash), just make sure you use it in a restrained and purposeful way.

kill that music and cheesy motion in the beginning, you dont need that crap to show you have great skills and content

i think in some circles there is a contemptment for flash. if we think about the history of flash its value to non-motion designers was that of creativity. it used tobe that flash was a way to do more visually. i think now with the surge that is css some have began to give flash another thought. there's also an aesthetic i think behind the readability and transfer speed of content. when im looking at a page i want it to load quickly. it puts me in a better mood and im more likely to fully accept the piece visually. compatibility is another important thing to think about. what more important to you everyone being able to view your product or only those who have flash plug ins. the designer in me wants build a 1600x1200 website that is 100% flash and action script , broadband only. but from a marketing stand point that mind set is suicide
