due you all mostly distinquish the 2 by physical location in a retail environment ?
i am realizing as i try to explain it 2 people i am working with on a project, that well, i have never explained the real difference, and in my head have mostly drawn a distinction by proximity to actual product

POP is stuff that sits on the counter or those bouncy 'wobblers' that stick to the till, leaflet holders on the counter that kind of thing, POS is stuff that lies around the store, sike custom shelving/ those things that hold drinks cans and whatever..
