Jumping into my 80's wayback machine (consider I was born in '68) First there was metal - Sabbath, Saxon, Judas Priest, Whitesnake, Purple, Motorhead etc. (I'm blurring it a bit). Then you had NWOBHM - Maiden, Tyger of Pan Tang, and so many others..then you had American Thrash - Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax, Exodus and Slayer. (The BIG FIVE - Pantera waas wearing make up and playing Van Halen cover tunes at this time. I have the vinyl to prove it). Then you had the hardcore euros come in - Venom, Celtic Frost, etc..
At the same time you had the hardcore scene devloping - DRI, Agnostic, CoC, Murphy's Law - who did influence East Coast metal somewhat
Then death came about out of thrash - Possessed (featuring Lary LaLonde who would go to fame in Primus) Death (hail Chuck Death RIP)..
At the same time you had Quiet Riot, Bon Jovi, Def Leppard, Twisted Sister, Ratt and the Crue hit mainstream. They were the public face of Metal until the public finally caught up with what Metallica was doing in 83...
So much good stuff - King Diamond, Sepultura, Helloween...
I odon't discriminate - all good metal...Dokken to Cannibal Corpse. Beats the shit outta Nu-metal or whatever Emo-core crap they got these days...
When mens was mens..

I know, they're not an original Metal band, but they rock...
PRIMUS.

Sepultura...
remember when they released A.D.
a friend of mine was in Copacabana, Rio and spotted Cavalera surfing, he offered him tickets for Chaos opening gig:
words like 'brutal' can't describe it.
brazilian metal/HC is one of the heaviestinj the planet.
Roots is a true portrait of Brazilian society.

What was the other brazilian metal band from those days - "Rats in the basement" or something..

Quiet Riot...
I'm definitely crying.

What lele - you didn't feel the noise?
The most redeeming thing about Quiet Riot? That was Randy Rhoads band b4 joining Ozzy.
Those two Ozzy albums with Randy made Ozzy what he is today.
Damn rock stars and their plane crashes...why do the good ones always have to go..

I still listen to that cassette tape...
absolutely great.

FINALLY!
A non portuguese-speaking that knows 'Ratos de Porão'!
Those guys are my favourite HC band. The most brutal concerts I ever watched in my live, total carnage.
Their lyrics are absolutely amazing, brazilian slang always cracks me up..
The lead singer, Jão 'Gordo' ['The Fat'] weights almost 200kg and bears one of themost powerful voices I heard.
rockin' since 1981.

I think it's time to start a thread on Sonic Youth...

AnArchitect - That was it!! Ratos de Porao!! Awesome...Thanks!! God, I remember those guys. Considering I do Capoeira I am pretty connected to Brazilian stuff.

You know - getting back to Maiden - they WERE one of the few bands that everyone could agree on. Them and Priest. And Sabbath of course, but that goes without saying. (I always liked the Dio albums better with the Sab though...)
You could always play them and everyone was cool
