I am starting out on my own (web design) after leaving a large hosting firm in the US. I am looking to find work, how did you find work when you first started out?

start attacking people!
(pitching.. have an aggresive approach)
- derek20050
also your website.. you need to get a buzz going on about it, and people will start throwing jobs at you

go down to city hall and get a list of startup companys..they are a good target.

i personally would wait until i have clients lined up, or atleast in talks before leaving my job for freelance.

I didn't do anything. Haha.
No, but really, you have to have buzz around your work and your website first.

that wasnt negotiable, i was fired while i was on my honeymoon
because i asked for the raise i was promised and then said if i didnt get it was going to leave.

well...I also just recent quit my job for freelancing...and i got no buzz around my website, matter of fact, it aint ready yet ( i know I suck) but I still have fait that it will work out..allready got some work lined up.

i used to target smaller companies with shitty websites, then mock up a new homepage of their site that looked much better, contact them and give them a bid to build the site i proposed. i got the business a little more than half the time.

i personally wouldn't leave unless i have at least 3-4 clients lined up, not just small clients, but major account where i can make sure to get decent profit.
web world is saturated with so many designers. you need to have your edge to compete with others who's willing to cut down the cost.

tkmeister,
totally feel you...
some companies are doing sites at 300 a pop! the client doenst know better! they just think they are getting a bargan! its all about having the edge, and selling your ideas to the client, and making them fully believe you are the least risk
- tkmeister0
derek,
thanks for making me feel like right on! lol

some companies are doing that because they can, there are companies in small towns outsourcing work and selling the 300.00 sites and making money, people who know nothing about web design making money from sub par designers using front page.

in some other cases, good designers are hungry and rather give away 300 design and eat than wait for the 6,000 design and keep starving.

and when you add wife and children to the image is even worse!

Either focus on Super Fancy Dynamic Flash or Web Standards, and create a buzz.
A good friend of mine focused on the Web Standards scene and created a good buzz. Now the work won't stop coming in.
Do you have a portfolio up?
Good Luck. :-)

What about using online bid sites or creative agencies? These run the gamut from getting you pretty poor work to decent, but at least it's a paycheck.

i had a company up before i went to work for the host and did ok. the design crew left after i did when they found out they were not getting the money they were promised. We all worked together before going to work for the man.
