PS color to b/w q?!?!?

I found a good tutorial a while back that explained a technique of converted color photos to black/white in Photoshop. Obviously it wasn't a simple "desaturate" or convert to greyscale. It went into detail about tonal value and whatnot.
If anyone has any good links on this, I'd really appreciate it.

i like to apply the b&w gradient and then adjust the contrast.

are you simply monochroming (if that's a word?)
I can definitely see more detail in the adjusted image than desaturated image, tho it makes for a dark overall image.
