Can anyone recommend a good email marketing provider, either software based or from a company offering it as a service.
Basically, I want to send a newsletter to about 2,000 contact, I design and build the newsletter myself but I need something that can track user statistics such as; who opened the email, who they forwarded it to etc. etc.
I assume that most people who send newsletters have statistical analysis fed back to them, is this the case?
Hope someone can shed some light.
Thanks...

Some of those features you are looking for would be pretty cool actually! I've scipted my own newsletter but I have not included and stat tracking. It was more important to me at the time to allow users the ability to opt in and opt out on demand which I was able to provide. It also stops the same people from signing up twice and has the ability to block sign ups from any particular domain... such as hotmail accounts. Perhaps if someone wishes to collab on the project I can offer up my source. Shoot me an e-mail and let me know.

SadisticJay, keep me informed of any developments on that, I found a service online for the short term (http://www.campaigner.com), I would be interested in something that I could have full control of myself and not have to pay per email or for a flat monthly fee (with six month min. contract).
My email is in my profile.

Just thought I would revive this thread, getting a few requests for email marketing.
As before, any recommendations, ideally, I am looking for software based solutions.
Lets have em.

plugindesign, you can use yr raw server log files to track the response from emails [i.e clicks to yr site from the email]

Tell me more, currently, I am using an online company, basically they email it to 2,000 contacts, would I be able to do this from Apple Mail for instance, also, I need an opt in and out link.
Any thoughts.

you can track a link from different mail systems when they hit on your site. i.e the referrer would be mail.mysite.com for example. their are lots of variations but its possible.
also the easiest thing to do is to put a variable on the end of your link in the email you send out and then write a simple php script to pull out and record the hits with the variable ie http://www.mysite.com?source=mai…...
checking for the existance and value of source with every hit.
this doesnt show you that the user has opened the mail tho and not clicked the link

The majority of the big clients I work with use Email Visions Campaign Comander.. which can track open rates, click throughs the whole lot (even gives you some nice graphs), it's expensive though.. but very good at getting through spam filters, I've had some real success with it.
Bluestreak offer a good solution too.. apparently, I've never used them though - emap use them to manage a few of their mag/site mailouts:
Hope that helps - be careful of sending them out from your own server/machine though - 2000 is a fair few & could get your ip black listed as a spammer.. especially if you're doing it on a regular basis...
