Dunno...I heard he was actually one of the most successful illustrators in New York before he launched his career as a fine artist. Not debating the fact that he was a marketing genius tho...

UiU and Kodap - they're both from Portugal and my friends, you also might know them by the names of Nuno Valério and Carlos Quitério.

Greedo -
I agree. I just thought you didn't know he had a career as an illustrator before fine art.
He was not one of the most successful illustrators in NY... he did a lot of greeting cards and grunt jobs and starved most of the time. Google around for a bio if interested.

"In 1949 Warhol arrived in New York City, where he made a meager living in advertising display work. He took some of his drawings to Glamour magazine and received a commission to make drawings of shoes. These were published and admired; he then worked for a shoe chain. In 1957 a shoe advertisement brought him the Art Directors' Club Medal. His work appeared in Vogue and Harper's Bazaar magazines, and in 1959 he exhibited his gold shoe drawings in a New York City gallery."
-from the first bio I Googled
He didn't start exhibiting fine art until 1960. Warhol may have struggled at first, but he was doing just fine as an illustrator before his stardom.
