What are some Questions you ask yourself or the client to make sure you're working in the right direction and covering all the bases before beginning a web project?
ie. Q: What have you envisioned 'you'r website look like?

there are many questions you can ask. there are detailed processes you should take in order to garner what your client needs and wants.
Requirements.

see if the company is partial to a particular color pallete if they don't have a brand.

Are those real?

always ask for "keywords" -- single words that describe the feel of the site. "tech", "elegant", etc. Unless they're dumb and they tell you words like "edgy" and "flashy". Then just ask them how much money they're going to pay.

i ask a lot of questions on marketing strategy and what not, because that reflects on design.

Are they're any examples you can give?

Don't be afraid to get somewhat abstract on them. ie. "what kind of emotions should the design evoke?" "how will we know when we have succeeded?, taht kinda squishy stuff can be helpful down the line.
