The final answer is that it's the browser blocking it.
Bascially, some browser developers (and I have to agree with them) consider changing the status text a security issue.
Not knowing the URL you are about to visit isn't good because of recent phishing attacks that have been taking place all over the Web. If you can change something like http://10.0.0.1/evilbank.htm to appear as https://www.yourbank.com/login.h… then the less savy of us will enter their login details and hey presto, emptied bank account
You can switch "Status Changes" back on from the browser settings but you can't expect your users to do this, or even know about it.
It's just another thing we have to put with I'm afraid.
For your information - In Firefox, your can switch "Status Changes" back on by going Menu - Tools - Options - Web Features - Advanced and check Change status bar text
