i spent the whole day refining on directions for a logo and most of last week developing comps.
i created custom lettering for the logo, and pretty much got the idea down last week. everyone in office thought it was not bad. after showing to the client he liked it too, the type and color, little tweaks, but its really almost done.
so today i did exactly what i was told, just minor changes. i was excited cus i thought it is good to go. project done. at the end of the day i showed the art director, he starts criticizing how he "can't see the true form" of the logo because my decisions were too abrupt, and that the logo itself is consumed by the colors.
he wanted me to do a version of the logo in b/w, to see the true form, and then start again from there.
at the moment i was pissed. it might make alota sense how i wrote it, but the way i see it, the logo itself is already a beautiful form by itself, i mean, i didn't just dream it up. the way he said it was basically i dreamed the fucker up without much preconception, which is bs cus we talked over and over about everything before.
im all for making things better by approaching it from another angle, but the whole thing has been very much thought out, and executed under guidance.
all i wanna say is im sick of being bossed around unreasonably.
sory for the boring story.

++++++++++++++++++++++i believe it is page 387 paragraph 8 sub-section 4.2.007 sentences 13-18 part II
I'll quote:
"In the event of a complaint or discrepency in regards to any optically viewable project i.e. logo, website, business card, typeface, animation, video broadcast, etc. if three [3] or more verbal requests are made be it publicly or privately via e-mail, fax, phone, or thread posting, the afforementioned that made or made reference to said mentioned optically accessable project, has both the duty and responsibility to provide an example by which they can be judged and critiqued by, but not limited to, peers that may or not be knownst to the original posting party. this critique will be disscussed and reported on for a duration of time that has no expiration and can and most likely last indefinately"

i feel your pain, but... you never did a version of the logo in b&w?
i always work in b&w first for logos. colour distracts me unless the form is perfect. and it's so-oo much easier to add colour once the form is perfect!
go on, strip it back to b&w, make it work and add your colours afterwards. it will be super-sweet at the end i promise.
- mrming0
Yep - listen to vespa - your art director probably knows what he's talking about. Logos should always work in black and white so you would naturally start there.
- waynepixel0
Black and White. God dam IT.

i agree, you gotta be able to fax a logp. But I do agree, some art directors leave it til too late to give their feedback. They should check in everyday to see the progress, sounds like bad management

What about showing us the LOGO??????
- Clear0
agree with the guys above. LOGOS must work in b/w. Normally I create in b/w THEN move to a color version. If you do a color version first, you might be hiding a flaw in the form with a bright color or pattern etc...
ALSO add me to the list. Show the bad boy!!!

sometimes, when i was jr designer, i encountered this problem too. but now i look back those years, i've gained a lot by giving another try at already good comps, etc.
there must be a reason why AD is letting you try again, or is he a complete A?
