I play tested XBox before anyone else in Singapore... didn't pay very well but money wasn't the issue.
It was the only time when I got a group of my friends spending weeks playing the XBox and STILL get paid for it.
No complaints there.

if you're gonna do it, i don't recommend EA - i don't know if you've heard about it, but there was a blog of EA worker's wife revealing the life of EA employees. my friend also works for EA (not as tester but in art dept) and she says while the company has been trying to be better at employee treatment and management, there are still a lot to improve.
i know lots of people who work for game companies and most don't have life much - they usually work anywhere between 50-90 hours/wk depending on season and what they do there. some companies like sony are better at compensating employees by giving them extra vacation days upon completion of a project or giving them bonuses, others not so. i know this because one of my ex bfs works for lucasarts, my ex roommates worked for various game companies such as midway, sony, and EA.
either way, you really have to LOVE all aspects of games. testing games seems like a dream job, when in fact, you're not just playing through a game, but you'll be doing a lot of boundary testing (like hitting a wall from different directions multiple times) or checking certain scenarios, etc. you may not be assigned on your favorite genre on game too. overall, not only should you love games, you should love shipping quality games - then you qualify for being a game tester.my 2 cents.

yeah, lots of tedious work usually. playability is a small part sometimes.. it's mostly technical stuff.. looking for seams in textures, irregularities, etc...
not bad once you get past some of that stuff though.. you kinda get sick of games though.
