I know I am not alone in this.
I work 50+ a week at my job, and then another 25+ at home.
Why?
Why can't there be one job that satisfies the creative drive and pays enough to eat more than Mac & Cheese and Ramen Noodles and still have money to pay bills with?

I have a feeling you're doing alot of this work for friends maybe??

I wish it were friends - then at least they might offer a reach around after theyre done with me....

man, you maybe asking too much. just enjoy life when you can.
it is important for me to do well in what i do, but sometimes, work isn't everything.

I think it's cos' we love it. Doctors, nurses, firemen work long hours too, but they save lives.
Clients have turned into tight asses too and the cost of living gets more and more expensive each year.
I'm doing the lottery tonight in a bid to retire early.

What I am about to say comes from first hand experience.
Last year I worked and freelanced my ass off. In the end I payed off a few credit cards and what not but come December I really took a step back and looked at what I gained from it, or, as I know now what little I gained from it. The money was ok but I missed out on so much. I hardly ever went out during the week, and at least 2 nights of the weekend were devoted to work.
Looking back it's not worth it. If you can live on your full time job and a little freelance do it. Being 30 I know life is way too short to work through it.
Maybe you need to pick and choose your projects a bit better. Rarely now do I touch anything that really isn't worth my time. $500 site? No thanks. I pass it along to someone else unless I know I can finish it in less than 10 hours. If not it's not worth my time. Because when it comes down to it, with every year that passes you realize your time is invaluable.

you'll get no sympathy here.

Kona, thanks for that response - I agree with a lot of what you say, and am definitely meeting those "crossroads". I just feel like sometimes, if I dont do the work, its a missed opportunity to try something better... basically I shoot myself in the foot over and over again.

i know why, it's cause you are INSANE!!!!
jk :P

correct me if i'm wrong... but i see a lot of indie band work there..........
not much money in that.
you sacrifice a lot to do cool work, unfortunately, and some designers love the tradeoff... and surprisingly even do it for free.

damn.... I had Lobster tail flown in from maine and filet mignon last night....

Gucci, its absolutely true - Indie bands have little to no money, and most of them have bigger expectations and chips on their shoulders than clients with big budgets. Its insane...
but what's a designer supposed to do - I cant seem to land a job fulltime with a client roster/design ethic I can be satisfied with alone.

what Kona said...is spot on. now I go home and play with the kids.
