just recently heard of an initiative in a few Skandanavian cities to push for free public transportation. very logical.
basically works like insurance ... you pay a small monthly fee to the group known as Planka, ride the city's transportation without buying a fare, and they pay the fine if you get busted.

sounds cool. Yet not really free if you pay a monthly fee?

right ... nothing's free :) even in the end, the free public transit would be due to a small tax increase.
still, i think it seems as though the benefits would outweigh the increasing fares.
have to look into this more.

What about in eg. London where you need a ticket to actually get through tube/rail barriers or onto a bus?
Otherwise, good idea.

read about it some years ago, then they had some legal problems.

I wish they'd at least bring in performance guarantees, even in a monopoly-driven public transportation system (thinking London public transport here)...i.e:
- If the train is late, you get credits back on your e-ticket
- If you have to stand up the whole way, credits back
- If the train is really bumpy, more credits back (motion sensors in ticket)
- too hot, too cold...credits back (temperature sensor in ticket... no rubbing it!)
- noisy/smelly people next to you...credits back (noise and smell sensors)
- having to put up with awful design... the recorded voice screaming "STAND CLEAR OF THE DOORS!!" in Earls Court station elevators (so many times that it is actually dangerous, since you cant be sure how long message has been playing)... well how do you measure that?
...basically if they dont deliver a good service they get paid less.Or maybe I'll get a car.

Public transit should be free regardless. Anyone who drives a car should be funding it. Well at least until cars are banned from metrolpolitan areas.

here in Chattanooga, TN we have a free electric bus line for the downtown area..
i used it when staying at a hotel the first time i came here.. i thought it was part of the hotel's services.. but then we made stops and other people got on for free as well..
friggin weird but very cool... won't be long before they start charging for it i bet.. but it's truly free right now..

great idea - there definitely needs to be more of a push for public transport in north america. too many cars and rush hour is getting out of control in my area
