Do any of you find it difficult to design you own logos or identity system? I've come up with a wide range of styles but I am having a hard time making something I can stick with.

go with a wordmark.

YES! designing for yourself is the hardest thing because you are your own worst critic.

cultivate a multiple personality.
- voila! problem solved.

Right now I am just using a simple blackletter typeface. It doesn't look that cool on business cards compared to other things I have made and I am not sure how it would translate to my local market.
I want to get some cards printed but I feel like it has to be perfect before I print them and once I do I am stuck.

i have 257 logos.
they're all very specific.

i hear ya seed!
same here.
and good to mention 'local market'.
that makes it so hard for me as well..

eugh...signatures.. I re-do mine once a year.
Ostensibly, it's to give the crooks a hard time.
Actually, it's because I'm retarded.
Thank fuck for 'chip and pin'

and good to mention 'local market'. that makes it so hard for me as well..
--What are your concerns in designing your identity for your market?
- vburo0
well, good design vs. accepted ideas of design.
in other words:
my knowledge and aesthetics vs. the perception of the locals here.
- vburo0
or better worded:
there's been times i had lost gigs to competition that love to make the logo bigger and do flash-intro's and think bevels are the new haute..

i had the very same problem. however, i found the ebst solution: don't use one. that's right. none. use your name and work under that. perfect, simple and very friendly.
even better, make a stamp!

Thanks for the info Janne. I like Vormburo and the logotype BTW. I don't think the local yokels would see a blackletter typeface or maybe even a serif and associate it with a tech or design company.
That stamp thing is cool BTW.

i've had mine since i designed it in college and i'm never going to change it. but i have come up with some cooler ones.
- vburo0
word on the stamp idea!
funny thing is i thought about that earlier this week. Might just do that.

John, I've noticed your logo before and liked it alot.
dfd, what kind of paper did you use for your cards?
