how do fellow nyc designers/studios solicit for work? I already have repeat clients/referral from friends, etc.. Was wondering more if anyone uses recruitment agencies and the like, and if so, which ones.

i guess folks are competitive around here

the 'employment opps' tab is great, but we're a studio so we're not looking for on-site/position work. wondering if people who run/are in studio want to chime in and talk about how they promote themselves and get work to come in...

reputations...
nyc is a small world. if your work is good and you have some connections, you should be able to get somewhere.also if you provide a good service, they'll come back to you or even refer to their friends at other companies. what goes around comes around.

also, stay away from placement agencies. they usually deal with individual designers, not studios.
nyc is competitive... that's for sure.
if you have repeat clients and referals from your friends, doesn't that keep you busy enough?

I used head hunters before, but not many I trust as they tend to think of there own pockets rather than your personal and professional happiness.
good luck

we do have repeat clients, referrals, etc, which has done really well for us. but we do a lot of the youth market type stuff. i was just thinking, say, we wanted to add some annual report clients for example. how do you go about finding those people? in other words, how do you avoid being stuck doing the same type of work over and over?

another question might be, how do you go about expanding a studio? getting more and diverse work into your studio is just as challenging as the work itself. does anyone have experience with this?

throw a party in your studio.

taragee- i worked for many dif places in nyc for years until i got enough contacts to start my own thing. this has worked out well, but i find that now, 5 years later, we're (a) wanting to work on new, different client work (in addition to our existing), and (b) bring in more work to possibly expand to 3 people. the promo idea is a good one. any others?

taragee, how do you get your clients? do you do a lot of cold-calling?
