hey
had to do some serious back ups soo got a usb 2.0 hd - but its well sketchy = its slow and freezes up all the time, just locks up after a while, making it impossible to even use really.
also got a usb to ide adaptor and this has the exact same problem, the drive always seems well slow and thedrive just freezes after a while
anyone got any suggestions in whats up ? i'm using win xp.
thx in advance

what does your event log say?
- Rinse0

xp home
the usb external hd is usb 2.0
the ide to usb adaptor supports 1.1 and usb 2what u mean by event log ? sorry no follow on that
yeah tried the latest driver for both,
- sparker0
all windows systems keep a system log file (called the event log) which records problems, information, etc about your system.
righ-click *my computer* -> manage... -> event viewer
check to see if there are any critical errors or anything to suggest a problem.

well in the event viewer is loads of warnings from where the usb drive slows down and then crashes and loses the data that i was copying
is it normal for usb to be soo unreliable and sketchy ? doesnt seem possible

sounds like you are using a USB2 device on a USB 1 port?
- sparker0
yea, that's what i'm thinking.
what does the system information say about your usb devices?
