Relevance of Name

I was having a discussion with a friend about a potential name for our potential collaborative.
The name: Fancy Lads Design Club
He is iffy about the name. Is it abstract, stupid, clever? What name is?
Tomato, DS Emotion, Syrup, Lust, Attik.
I'm sure somebody thought these were weird names at first, but now they are household names.
With the work we do for clients, what sort of ideals should we retain when naming ourselves?

it is indeed, a terrible name...what's the reasoning behind it?
- fate_redux0
Just keep it short. The longer it is, the less credibility you'll appear to have.

I would refrain from using Assassin.

Fancy Lad - kinda sounds like a New Age way of saying Gay!
- gruntt0
i call my cat "fancy boy" but i mean "fag"
- ********0
i love it.
but your work better be fucking ace.
Graphic Thought Facility... example of a long name that works
- gruntt0
i'm with nick. you can pull that name off if you work absolutely rocks.
- fate_redux0
I've never heard of Graphic Thought Facility.

Actually the name is sort of a commentary on design itself.
It is sort of supposed to sound kind of sally, gay, etc. because as great as being a designer is, many of us "fancy" ourselves quite a bit.
It's a bit of self deprecation, but all critiques are valid on the length and possible stigma.

it's kinda pretentious for an american, and a bit fruity.
but if you think it works... i'm not gonna blindly tell you it doesn't.
- 2cent0
for me... a fancy lad sounds like someone who likes a lil bum love from time to time.

Nick, Gruntt- you are the ones that get it. Yet you are also correct about the work being ace.
Well we do specialize in photo mugs, puff paint shirts and graphics for pens.
HaHa!

yeah, but who doesn't?
- mogwai0
LOL
thats hot ot call you studio "a club"
- AssassinAve0
I thought ambiguity often led a person to be termed "gay".
So if we're specifically getting everything out of the way initially with the name, the exact opposite thoughts should happen. Right?

I'm with the others here. Granted, any name can work if the work is good, but you've got a real uphill battle with that one.
Just imagine cold calling a client. "Hi, I represent the Fancy Lads' Design Club." I think I would hang up the phone laughing, no offense.
- Gorbie0
i wouldn't assume so much.
- mevsthem0
dosn't matter what length the name is there is alot of cool names that use more then one word. but that name you came up with isn't good in my opinion.
- AssassinAve0
Thanks for the opinons so far. I am really on the same page with the no people.
Sometimes you just have to fight hard for your children.
Yeah and you are right about cold calling. "what was that!"
