I want to make some toy prototypes for some ideas I have... what is the best thing to model with... is there a fimo type thing I should be using? the toys in the future will be bendable... but i want to make versions in solid form to start with

depends greatly on the type of toy. please tell us more.

have you ever seen those mice that are bendable... they look like 50s style cartoons...
eventually I want to have them produced with wires in so they are poseable... but in the meantime i need to make solid version shows the poses that can be done

I think i know what your talking about. kinda like Gumby?
If the form is gonna be really organic, then Fimo clay should be a good start. It would also be fun to model in 3D and send to a stereo lithography printer.
We have one at school and it is a blast.

use modelclay, it comes in many kinds and colors. you will find it in any art store

sculptors clay never dries out and can be used to make molds for production

isnt there stuff you can put in the oven or something? or is that pony? i don't want to have to take it to a firers or anything... kind of homemade for now... until I know what I doing... like when you cook chrisp packets in the oven
- ivan_cook0
fimo cooks in the oven. gets really hard, but also rather brittle. It doesn't like to be any thinner than about 1/8 th inch either.

don't use the oven shite, it shrinks and breaks.. it 's a kids thing!
get some good modelclay that is hard when you get it , but as you start to mold it, it softens up.. when you are done, it will go back hard..

i agree with designerror. The fimo isn't great to work with.
It would also probably not be too hard ( and tons of fun ) to make a plaster mold and cast a few with wires and everything in a hardish latex or softish resin.

fimo is crap
- Mimio0
ehem...plasticine.

thats the thing you want, it can build anything, they sent a working bearing set that they printed outa this green stuff.

plasticine is silly putty, isn't it?
which is useless for sculpting.
